Complete BOTH of the "Required Activities" listed below. THEN, complete 2 of the 4 "Optional Activities" listed below.
Required Activities:
Activity 1:
To start this unit, you need begin by finding out what natural resources are! Go to DHEC's website to and read about natural resources. Then, in your science journal describe:
1) what natural resources are
2) examples of natural resources
3) the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources
4) what challenges arise from using natural resources
5) examples of products made from natural resources
6) why are natural resources important
Each answer recorded in your science journal should be at least three sentences long. Once everyone has read the article and wrote their findings in their science journals, we will discuss the answers as a class!
You will need:
Activity 2:
Now that you know more about what natural resources planet Earth has to offer, it is time to learn more about the conservation of those natural resources. Conservation means to preserve, protect or restore our natural resources.
Go to Ollie's World to find out more about how we can take care of our planet! You are going to complete a graphic organizer as you read through the website slides. Download the file below to print off your graphic organizer.
First, click on the globe labeled "Sustainability." Then click on the blue underlined "sustainability" link. On your graphic organizer, describe what sustainability is. Then, click the right arrow and read through the slides about sustainability. List 10 facts you learned about sustainability in your graphic organizer. Then, describe what a renewable resource and a nonrenewable resource is on your graphic organizer. Read the "Conserving Energy" slide VERY carefully. Click on the "More information about saving energy at home" link. List 10 ways you can conserve energy at your home on your graphic organizer.

Optional Activities:
Optional Activity 1:
Is your mind still wondering about all the different types of natural resources planet Earth has to offer? Go to BrainPOP and watch the video about natural resources. After you have watched the video, respond to the video in your science journal by answering these two questions:
1) Why are natural resources so important?
2) What could happen to the planet Earth if we do not take care of it?
Your response should be at least 2 paragraphs long.
You will need:
Optional Activity 2:
To learn more about the energy resources planet Earth has to offer, go on an energy scavenger hunt! Click on the link, then follow the directions. You are going to print off all of the pages of the pdf. Energy Kids will have you visit multiple websites in order to answer the questions on the worksheets. Once you have completed the scavenger hunt, turn in your worksheets, including your Energy Expert Certificate! (It is the last page of the pdf). Ask your teacher if you need help printing off the pages.
You will need:
Optional Activity 3:
Think about the natural resources you use in your own home. Make a list of all the natural resources you use every day. Then, evaluate why you use those natural resources. Decide which of the resources you use daily is a nonrenewable resource. Pick two of the nonrenewable resources you listed. Think of ways that you could conserve those resources in your every day life. Draw two pictures in which you either (a) use an alternative source of energy to the nonrenewable resource you currently use or (b) think of a way you can greatly conserve the nonrenewable resource you use every day. Write your list and draw your pictures in your science journal. Provide a written description of how your pictures help to conserve the natural resources you use in your life.

Optional Activity 4:
Where does all our trash go?
Watch this video on landfills and garbology to find out! As you watch this video, print off and then fill out this flow chart by listing the steps trash takes as it goes to the landfill!
